Crafting with my kids: Galaxy T-Shirts

send from InstaText

One of my dear friends from undergrad (we met 20 years ago!) was in town for a conference.  She stayed with us on Friday night and  wanted to do some crafting with the kids.

We made these galaxy shirts.  The black t-shirts are all thrifted for less than 2 dollars {I resized ours with the serger}. We used this tutorial by Stars for Streetlight  (but a different fabric spray dye (sei tumble spray dye) , which really lightened up once heat set, so I would recommend spraying quite heavy if you are using sei).

This would be a fun project if you were having a crafty Star Wars party.

Lily plans to wear hers when she sings for  the Space Jam and Space Commander Chris Hadfield next week.  We found some silver leggings (nearly 100% cotton  yeah!)  at Target so it’s perfect.

Happy Earth Day

Earthdaycollage4(Coffee filter globes, you find tutorial here )

Can you believe it is the fourth week of spring?  For the past few weeks, my daughters and I have been working on a number of  Earth Day projects.

Yesterday, was our annual park clean up.   I have been participating in these sort of clean ups for about ten years.  It is a great way to meet people who live in your neighbourhood, I highly recommend it!

Our park is pretty special – you can (sort of) see the size from the photo below - the park covers a large city block (splash pad and pool, ice rink, playground, two diamonds, a soccer pitch, and a fenced in dog park  - a community garden has recently opened as well). Everyone takes on a small section.  After pitching in, there was a marshmallow roast and cocoa at the fire pit as well as other activities.

This month, we also built some bird feeders at a Home Depot workshop. Glittery boots and a hammer.

The feeders are being enjoyed by feathered furry friends.

Our pansies are planted….

and our snails have returned which makes my younger daughter really happy.

merimekko, with love

IMG_5161

Yesterday, I had a chance to lose myself over my lunch hour at the special Marimekko exhibit at the Canadian Textile Museum.   Bolts and samples from 50s, 60s, and 70s were on display.  For most of my visit, I had the exhibition to myself – what a treat.

There were also some garments on display.

The exhibit is a “retrospective look” at Marimekko’s Finnish origins and the designer’s introduction to North America.     Here is an interesting tidbit, in 1960,  Jackie Kennedy was photographed in a cover of Sports Illustrated in a Marimekko dress which gave the brand instant popularity in America.  Great fabric, simple lines – the rest is history.

Crafting with my kids: Earth Day Projects

IMG_4995

We have been working on a number of projects, including some recycled crafts to celebrate Earth Day. This is our cardboard earth.

IMG_4992

The girls have been more interested in big projects, some projects take several days to complete.    This earth was created with cardboard, handprint, and a sponge.  The cardboard tube rocket is based on this great recycled idea at Martha.  earthcardboard

This is another “big projects” - we did this “little” self portrait a few weeks ago.  Really big mug shots.

Speaking of big projects, there is an amazing installation in my office complex which deputed earlier this week.  It is a recycled chandelier, entirely composed of clear plastic {an installation by Katherine Harvey

I love big projects!  Hope you’re having a great week,

Black Apple Doll

IMG_4790

This past weekend, we shared a special milestone.  My niece celebrated her first birthday. I made her this little black apple doll.  She enjoys her dollies and putting them to sleep in their beds.  This is a easy sewing project .  You can personalize the doll in so many ways.  My girls have asked for their own dolls. Emily Martin has a picture book being released in October, so I am thinking ahead to making a couple of dolls for them as well as the book for Christmas.

Sewing fine print: Pattern by Emily Martin, you can find the instructions and video at Martha Stewart Living

Sewing notes: I increased the pattern by 150% and added a 1 cm cutting allowance; the eyes and mouth are embroidered, 6 strands of floss, poly fill stuffing; hair felt; face and arms white canvas} The quilt is one block of scrappy trip around the world; Lily helped with the pillow and binding; felt apple barrette from Daiso}

Happy crafting!  It is supposed to reach double digits in these parts today.  We will be doing a happy dance!

French Canadian Sugar Shack: Le Domaine de L’ange gardien

IMG_4920

For Easter weekend, we made the nearly 5 hour road trip to the Ottawa area and had a chance to visit the sugar shack of  Le Domain de L’Ange Gardien [translated field of the guardian angel]  on the Quebec side.  I highly recommend this experience.  The pancake breakfast is excellent, complete with split pea soup, sugar pie, and unlimited maple syrup and pancakes.  You can see a photo of woven L'Assomption sash in the bottom corner.

There was a horse drawn sleigh ride (and snow on the ground!)

The maple sugar is poured out on the snow and wrapped on a stick to enjoy.

It was a blessed Easter and lots of memories were made.   I will leave you with a few photos of the glow-in-the dark Easter egg hunt (difficult to photograph). {Idea from here and we will definitely do it again}.
